A NEW NAME

November 19

Here we see God (Jesus, the Angel of the Lord) wrestling with Jacob. God initiates this fight to bring Jacob to the end of himself. This is not a dream, but a real event and God is showing Jacob that He is in control of all, not Jacob.  This happens right after Jacob has done everything he can to protect himself from his brother Esau who he believes wants to kill him. Jacob overcomes by prayer and faith in saying He would not let God go until He blessed him. God gives Jacob his new name as He has done and continues to do for those who believe in Christ. God gave us that name in eternity past, but it is the name which defines who we will be in Christ. Jacob’s name means deceiver, but now God is going to change him into one who is God’s warrior.  Have you had a spiritual encounter with God that changed your life?  He will change your physical and spiritual walk if you will seek Him.  Let Him do that today.

Genesis 32:24-30 Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day. 25 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. 26 And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.” But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!” 27 So He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.” 28 And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.” 29 Then Jacob asked, saying, “Tell me Your name, I pray.” And He said, “Why is it that you ask about My name?” And He blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: “For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”
