GREAT SACRIFICES

January 9

God called on Abraham to make five great sacrifices: his native country, his extended family, his nephew Lot, his son Ishmael, and his son Isaac. Each sacrifice involved something obviously dear to Abraham, but each resulted in greater blessings from God. Here we see the last great sacrifice as God calls to Abraham as He had done when He asked him to leave his home.  God was testing Abraham’s faith as He does ours to prove it’s character and strength (James 2:21-23).  The pagan’s were willing to sacrifice their children, so God tested Abraham’s love for Him.  We know that Abraham in                                                         Hebrews 11:19 believed that God would raise Issac from the dead and that is why He was willing to sacrifice his child.  Thankfully God does not always test us to such extremes, but when He does test us it is to make us more like Him. What have you given up or sacrificed for God?

“Life is a succession of tests, for character is only possible through discipline.” 737Thomas, p. 195.

Genesis 22:1-3 Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
