Lydia being a rich woman was another of God’s unlikely candidates to get saved to start the Philippian Church. God also saved the cruel gentile jailer and a demon possessed woman. These were the first converts. God used all of them to build a mighty church on the Ignatian Way (Via Egnatia) which was the road which was the lifeline between the Western and Eastern parts of the huge Roman Empire.. The establishment of this church meant that all people who came through this area could be exposed to the Gospel and the missionaries could easily move into all areas sharing the Gospel.
A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening; and the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul. (Acts 16:40)
