A REFUGE IN TIMES OF TROUBLE

January 11

I remember when I was younger one of my favorite passages that I had marked with my grandfather’s obituary was one that spoke of God being a refuge, a stronghold or fortress in times of trouble.  I guess I marked that passage with his obituary because I remember that being a very tough time when we lost my grandfather. Even though at the time I was not saved, I had been in church just enough to know that God was there for us when times were tough. This word refuge and fortress means a place of security and protection. David often fled to these physical places to hide from Saul, but knew that the Lord was the best place to hide in times of trouble. To know the name of God in the Old Testament was equivalent to being saved.  David calls on those who are afflicted and oppressed to praise God and testify to others about God’s care for them.  Let’s be like David and do that today.  PRAISE HIM, PRAISE HIM FOR HIS EXCELLENT NAME! AMEN!

Psalm 9:9-11 The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, A refuge in times of trouble. 10 And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You. 11 Sing praises to the LORD, who dwells in Zion! Declare His deeds among the people.
