LORD, WE WANT OUR EYES TO BE OPENED OR THE BREAD FROM HEAVEN

January 31

God fed the Israelites with the food that came down from Heaven.  Jesus said He was the bread that came down from Heaven (John 6). This manna was the only food they had for the 40 years of wilderness wandering.  Christ is the only (spiritual) food we need during our earthly “wilderness wandering” on the way to the promised land (heaven). Nothing else satisfies, nothing else gives spiritual strength and life. It also represents his humiliation as His body was shattered before and after He was put on the cross.  He gave His flesh that we might have life and we remember that each time we celebrate the Lord’s supper. They went out early to get it as we need to feast on Jesus’ word and Spirit before our day starts. Let us start each day with time in the Word and with the WORD OF LIFE.

They said to Him, “Lord, we want our eyes to be opened.” (Matthew 20:33)

Exodus 16:11-16 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 12 “I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. And you shall know that I am the LORD your God.'” 13 So it was that quails came up at evening and covered the camp, and in the morning the dew lay all around the camp. 14 And when the layer of dew lifted, there, on the surface of the wilderness, was a small round substance, as fine as frost on the ground. 15 So when the children of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “This is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat. 16 “This is the thing which the LORD has commanded: ‘Let every man gather it according to each one’s need, one omer for each person, according to the number of persons; let every man take for those who are in his tent.'”

The Lord called all the people then alive in Judah, to pay attention to, and to take to heart, His message to them. He had not been as ungiving as a wilderness or as unenlightening as darkness to them. They had no reason to feel free to abandon Him. Let us remember...
