RIGHT PRAYING

October 18

Colossians 1:9-10 needs to have verses 11-20 added to it to get the full intent of Paul’s prayer for the Colossians and all believers since it is one sentence in the Greek. Paul is praying that they will fully recognize and have the deepest understanding of God’s will for their lives. He is praying this so that they would be able to glorify God in all their conduct. He wanted to remind them that all understanding must only come through the Spirit of God working in and through them. He also wanted them to know that this Spiritual understanding is the only foundation to right behavior.

“It so often happens that in prayer we are really saying, ‘Thy will be changed,’ when we ought to be saying, ‘Thy will be done.’ Dunn, p. 55.

We have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God (Colossians 1:9-10)
