This phrase the Lord was with Joseph occurs 4 times in this chapter. It is important to note that the reason for Joseph’s success is that this was true. This was not because the Lord randomly chose this man, but because he was faithful in a little and therefore the Lord placed him in charge of much (Luke 16:10). Joseph was in charge of Potiphar’s house and all that he owned. The Lord even blessed Potiphar because of Joseph. In the Old Testament the way the Lord showed others that someone was faithful to God and a godly man was through earthly blessings. This was Old Testament; in the New Testament it says God has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in the heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3). That doesn’t mean that God can’t bless us this way now, but He blesses us in so many other ways that mean so much more than material possessions. Have you and I been faithful in a little so that God will be able to bless us in much? Let us draw near to God and ask God what it is that He wants us to do so that we might be a blessing to others around us.
Genesis 39:2-4 The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3 And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made all he did to prosper in his hand. 4 So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority.
